Evaluation

In this unit, we was focusing on food photography. Within food photography, we were working on design principles. In the end of the unit, our final photographs is presented as posters to advertise a food establishment so size, format and the design of our final concept has to be fit for purpose. Along with doing numerous tasks and additional work of exploring the theme of 'Food Glorious Food', all these were helping us build up our ideas into creating these final posters using all the techniques we have learned throughout this unit.

Task 1
This task was about conducting some historical and contemporary research on photographers that have produced images based on the theme of food. I believe the task went well because I've looked at various examples of artists and photographers from both historical and contemporary times. I've also conducted some of my own additional research on some of the photo taking techniques that is frequently used for food photography. I really enjoyed looking at the contemporary side of food photography like my moodboard because I thought it was really eye catching with the way they've used some of the camera techniques.

Task 1b
This is the second half to task 1. After doing research and looking at lots of food photography, It was time to put all this into practice. As I've already evaluated the task throughout, I just want to summarise that it was quite challenging over the theme. I think we misinterpreted what I believe is the theme of the task but I tried to overcome that misconception and did a re-shoot. Overall I am pleased with my images because I've thought of capturing different styled shots using different techniques like shallow depth of field. I've thought and considered each of my shots and thought of catching the ambience. The greatest outcome of the task was the communicational element because I loved working around people and just having this interaction, even if it meant asking for permission to shoot. I guess the real question is would i be happy if I used the images for advertising or promotional uses and I would say I am.

Task 2
Oh crumbs was about still life photography. Still life photography is all about an inanimate object that doesn't move in other words. As the subject is small, lighting intensively isn't really necessary and less power would do the job. So studio equipment isn't really needed and you can set up a still life studio with just using daylight from a large window. Lighting in still life is the most important element in my opinion. With the daylight, you can also use reflectors to bounce light into shadow areas and soften any strong sunlight falling on the your set up. I think this is something I've not done because my main focus was on using the light metre but that is something I could do next time. I believe my photoshoot went well and I love how natural the oreo pictures turned out because of me setting the white balance manually. I think the lighting in my images were great because I used the window to get some daylight and it really lit up the biscuits. Overall, it was a good task and my pictures came out great. I enjoyed doing still life and I think this gave us a flavour of how the rest of the project will go. In the end, this task did influence me in my images because I wanted the white space for example for my raspberry blast poster. I didn't get to use the studio but that is something I would like to do next time.

Task 3
Sunday Dinner was quite a challenge in my opinion. I wasn't confident that my pictures would be good enough to the theme but I still gave it a shot and did my cultural food. I like how I get to bring some culture influences in my images. I did mention in the task that I don't really have a Sunday dinner so it was interesting for me. I did try to make the food look appealing with the way I laid it on the plate. On the safe side, I did another additional shoot of pizza which went well. I think in this task, I would only make improvements with the lighting just to give it that brighter exposure without losing any details on the subject.

Task 4
Food for Thought was honestly the best task for me in this project in terms of picture taking and idea planning. I think it went amazingly good and I am really proud with my images that I've considered and took time shooting on. I just loved how we got to plan our own photoshoot which lets us be independent and be creative working around a theme. It also was a smoother task because I didn't have to stress too much over the theme if I was taking relevant or random pictures. This was all about us doing what we wanted and I just loved getting on with it. Instead of coming up with a minimum of 1 type of food/idea, I came up with 3 plans that i would like to photograph most on and worked around it. I've also then did an additional shoot on the skittles which was focusing on my research technique. I've been evaluating the task as I went along but to summarise, I am really happy with the images and I like how I've thought and considered of the techniques and the research that I've explored throughout the tasks and applied it to my own work. I think the final images out of the task were perfect for my poster design.

Poster Research
I believe this task went exceedingly well. I got a range of different posters from sources like billboards, handouts, newspaper and online. For each poster, I've analysed the imagery and the typography they've used. I believe this has helped and inspired me to understand the design responsibilities of things they need to include such as a logo and inform us about the product at the minimal. I've also looked at how cross-cultural influences make an impact on the design poster for example with the Chinese language poster. I've also looked at the design principles which will help me with my posters. An example of the principles is alignment which i've looked at when I was talking about the positioning of the logo. Also looked at the proxinity within posters and how they should be spaced out to minimilise clutter and grab the viewer's attention.

Principles of Design Guidance

Poster Power
This is the finale of the project. So far my understanding of the principles of design and the design responsibilities is understood clear from the research side of it. Now it was just time to demonstrate my understanding and put it to practice. I've evaluated the task on my posters so I won't go too much over it. But I believe that I really have understood the principles of design in the way I spaced out all the responsibilities on a poster like the social media link and the logo in order for it not to be cramped. I believe my posters use contrast in linked colours to increase the viewer's comprehension. There is also this consistent repetition with using the same logo in some of my posters but adjusting the style so it works well with each individual poster. I've also created a cross cultural example just to add some of that design element in my work. Overall, I believe I have created innovative design work that uses all these techniques for the imagery and design side of things.

Final Mounted Prints
For my final mounted prints, I've selected 5 10x8" prints that is professionally produced from ProAm. I've used two sheets to display my images. 4 of those were horizontal and 1 was vertical. I've selected these images because they are all a different variety of food photography that I've produced over these tasks. I have mounted the tea and biscuits together because I feel like there's this breakfast theme here and the two just work well together, they were also taken on two different tasks. The other images are just a random selection that I put together which were a variety from the tasks. I think the main highlight image to me is the strawberry tart and I like how this was the only vertical image so it stood out the most.

And that is it.

Poster Power

In this final task, we are required to produce a poster to advertise a food establishment. Following on from the poster research task, I will be using some of the techniques and the design elements to create my own. Our posters could be for a café, a restaurant, a pub or a bakery. Since my ideas have been more about bakery, I will be creating my own bakery establishment which will be consistent in my posters. I think I will be using only 1 image in the design because according to my research, that's the technique that has been used frequently. I would also use typography that I think would link well with the image. As I've mentioned too, my posters will be going for that simplistic look so the main focus will be on the image but I will still be considering about using the right typography to suit my design.

Here are some of my poster draughts:

Sketches

When I was designing my posters, I already knew the images I was going to use from my 'Food for Thought' task so I was sketching these while looking at my images. I am confident that I will be able to create the posters the way I envision it. No 1 is of the image of the strawberry tart that I liked. I think this would be good for a poster because of it's shallow depth of field. No 2 is the sausages that had the oil bubbles on it. I picked this for the same reason as No 1. No 3 is the chocolate brownies image that I wrote about. This is a horizontal image but I will try crop it in a vertical format so it's focused closely on the brownie texture. And Lastly, No 4 is the image of the raspberry tart I wrote about with the white space. I will try and make this poster in a horizontal format to show the difference in format.

As soon as I knew what my poster would look like through my envisions, I started working on them immediately on Photoshop. I knew that I wanted to put effort in to them so I got cracking straight away because I thought it would take up some time, especially whilst planning and conducting to create 4 posters too. I actually enjoyed this process of the unit because I could actually get into designing and I quite like that.

After a few couple of hours, I have my 4 final posters. So here goes.

Printed Version

Cross-Cultural Version

This is my first poster. Using my sketch as a guide, I've pretty much followed it except a few placements. I've change where the social network link is to the opposite side because it's better sitting on the foil then having it the strawberry. Also switched the price to the other side because it nicely sit's near the main tart so the tag can draw our attention in that area. I've kept the logo at the top in the centre and slightly lowered the title than where it should have been because it's just above our main focused tart. As you see, I've used this strawberry tart image which is also non-edited as my background. This has worked nicely because it does really have a strong focus on a specific point rather than having the full image in focus. I've then created a logo which is actually separate layers with text in between and the layout extracted from a clip art, and I intend to use throughout my posters for my bakery themed images. Now using the website 'dafont.com' which I've used throughout for each poster, I've used typography considerately to make up all the text I've used. In this specific poster, I used this amazing font for the 'strawberry tart' that has lots of speckles and sparkles which I thought really worked well. Using the blending option, I've added an red outer glow so it's red and white linking to the strawberries and cream. For the social network link and the text above the title, I've used white with a black outer shadow so it gives it a little bit of edge. Whilst I was designing this, I've changed the logo colour a couple of times because I couldn't figure out what would work best. I selected this dark brown but it would be too dark so then I used the colour picker and selected the light colour from the pastry. This is actually inspired from my poster research where they've linked the colours to their food for example the subway poster with the meat coloured text. I've added this price tag using this paper design because I think it works nicely with all the browns in the image. In terms of contact details, I've only put an Instagram link because it's quite contemporary and keeps it simple. My main inspiration for this poster is the flirt poster of the cookie crumble milkshake that I've analysed on because of it's simplicity. This is where the arrangement influences came from and I'm actually content with the outcome.

Along with a standard poster, I've made another edition including the halal sign in Arabic just to add some of that cross-cultural element to it. Even though it's in Arabic, it's actually understood quite clearly to Muslims that this is a halal sign so there's not a worry that it's not really written in English. This would just ensure and clarify that the food is halal for Muslims so it would attract to us. I don't think that a halal sign really does have a huge impact on the design in most cases. I mean I demonstrated this with using the same design. But like I've shown in my research, I understand when they might clarify what country the product is produced in. I think if a poster might not have a halal sign then it's a different story where Muslims would question if it's okay to eat it depending on what it is of course so that might make an impact on some posters. Nevertheless, I am very pleased with this poster because I've used an good image, considered the typography, and applied design principles like the price, the product name and an creative logo of a swirly cupcake.

'Sizzles'

This is my second poster. I've made a few adjustments so it's just a little bit different from my first one. So I've decided to put the social links to the top so it's not really near my main focus which is the sausages. I've also decided to include a phone number because it suits the animated sausage on my logo. I've also decided not to really give it a title and just have the logo as the main feature with some additional text which is like a slogan that says 'the best in town'. I've selected a curly font for that phase because I like how that contrasts with the contemporary type of font I've used and this curly one gives it a bit more tradition especially when we're talking about it being the best in town, it needs to show that it's quite olden and historical and by using an old style of font, I believe it really portrays that. I've also inserted text which says 'opening soon' to show that it's a new establishment. In terms of typography, I've selected to use these fonts because I like the bold and distinctive look. The logo has a spaced out text and I think that makes it stand out. I've placed the logo where it is because it's sitting on top of the blurred bits of the image so it stands out quite a lot. Along with the typography, I've actually added this sausage skew animation on to the logo to give it this nice design principal that links the title to the image. The lines above the word sizzles is actually me applying the design from the subway poster that similar lines on their typography. Overall, I like how simplistic this poster looks and it's pretty contemporary with the design style.

'Chocolate Brownies'

Dafont.com
Photoshop - Working with multiple layers

This is my third poster. I've completely rearranged the design from the way I sketched it. That's because as I was designing, it just looked better to put things in place in a considerate way. So far I've moved the logo to the top right instead of the centre because so far it's been in the middle in my other posters. Then put the Instagram link opposite it instead of the bottom to hide some of that excess background in the image. Added the title in the middle because it correlates with the image and it's on the most sharpest bit, but this was initially nearer to the bottom if you have a look at that Photoshop screenshot. Lastly, I've placed the price on the bottom instead of near the centre because I didn't want to block the picture.

With the typography, I believe that has been done really well. I've used the website 'dafont.com' as shown in the screenshot and selected these fonts. It's actually a long process that I had to conduct for all my posters because I have to screenshot the text then paste it on to Photoshop. Once that is done, you have to use the magic background eraser and erase all the white background so you're left with the text. Then you drag it on to your poster and then use the blending options and colour overlay to change the colour you want and add any effects. In this poster, I've selected this bold and chunky font which I thought really would work with my brownies. Then used the colour picker and selected the bright sponge colour so that the design of the text would link to the image. I've also added some drop shadows to give it some depth and then placed the word 'Brownies' over 'Chocolate' so you can see that distinctively. I think that little use of over-placing just makes the typography stand out and gives it a chunky theme. I've also added a limited edition text under the title because it's a design principal that is used is some advertisements. I've decided to stick to one colour with the text because I feel like it keeps the parts of the poster relevant to each other so nothing has more importance and has to stand out except the logo text which is not really included. If you have a look at the Photoshop screenshot, you can see that I've been working with many layers and most of the layers has a form of blending options used such as the drop shadow or the colour overlay so they tend to have a layer style. One of the reasons I really like this poster which is different to the others is the fact that it's captured so closely that the brownies are just filling the frame.

Last but not least is my final poster. I've decided to use this image because I liked the image itself and the white areas. I didn't really edit the image at all so it looks very natural. In this poster, I stuck to the plan of where I'll place the design principles because it works. I've decided to do this poster especially as it is a horizontal picture which is different to my other ones.

Logo
I've actually used the same logo as my strawberry tart and brownies editions but decided to change the colour and match it more for this individual poster. In this case was this purplish berry tone. This was inspired by the ieat poster that I've analysed. I decided to keep it in the bottom corner because it's white spaces so it would have instantly stood out. On the opposite is the Instagram username which I think works nicely next to the logo. What I've done differently this time is add a rectangular shape behind the Instagram details and have that box the same colour as the logo so it all correlates. I think that little box does actually make it look a little nicer because of the white spaces and it's just bringing some relevant colour in.

Typography
As you can see from the collection of posters, I've been contemplating on the typography I should use for the word 'NEW'. I felt like the first two were't quite working with the whole bubbly but distinctive look. However, I stuck with the last one because I felt like it was the most suiting and it works amazingly with the title. With the title, I decided to use this bubbly font because to me, it works with the raspberry concept and I just loved the look of it. I've also selected the colour from the actual dessert and made that connection. The colour for 'new' is picked from the pastry so that works too as it contrasts with the title. I think the inspiration from the 'new' typography is from the pizza hut poster that I've analysed on where they've used this lightbulb looking font which is instantly saying look at me.

Overall I am very pleased with my posters. I think they are very contemporary and they stand out pretty well. I've considered so much aspects in order to get a successful poster and especially when I've applied design principles in to my own design development. I went for the simplistic, natural and that minimalistic look and I think this gives a great aesthetic theme of modern or contemporary style of food. My posters turned out to be vibrant and colourful which covers one of the main element I've touched upon when I researched on food photography.

Poster Research

In this task, I will be conducting primary and secondary research on posters that are used to advertise food outlets. The food outlets could be anything from restaurants, cafés, pubs or a bakery. I will be try to look for a range of posters with different styles and different formats.

Primary Research
So for my primary research, I've headed to town to photograph any posters or adverts that I come across. I've found quite a few that were on phone boxes, billboards and just around town. It wasn't hard to find these posters eventually but when it became a task, suddenly it felt like they're nowhere to be found. Here are the posters/advertisements I've collected:

McDonalds

Here is the first poster. This is a vertical poster from McDonalds promoting their 99p cheese burger from their saver menu. I mean it's pretty self explanatory. Personally, I really like this poster. They've used a white background which is very eye catching. They've put their logo on the top left. Most importantly, they've thrown this extremely nice image of their cheeseburger just below the centre. And lastly, they've used some nice bold typography to specify the product. I think it's a pretty simplistic poster but it's something I get inspired by. I think the use of red is consistent with the logo and the typography so it works nicely and it contrasts well with the white. The typography for the 'saver menu' I think is used very nicely and it reminds me of them shop lights that you see which says 'Open'. I must say, this poster is actually quite nice but I could understand if someone was to think it's boring or basic.

PG tips

This is a vertical poster for PG tips. This is also similar to the McDonalds poster with the use of a white background. After some research on PG tips, they've decided to use their monkey to promote their tea bags. They also have the PG tips mug in the monkey's hand. After doing some more research, I believe the text is actually cup sizes in Starbucks. They've used text in this poster as humour, which is calling them sizes nonsense and you should 'keep it tea' meaning simple in other words. I know this isn't really a place to eat at or take food out but I thought I would include it because of the content with the text.

Caffé Nero

Outside Caffé Nero is this advertisement stand. They've used some cinnamon rolls as the main image which also uses depth of field with the background so it's sharp on the food. They've added some text above to inform us that it's been baked by them and at the bottom in smaller font, it says fresh every day. I like how it's been composed where it's all in the centre. Think the image is quite nice. It has nice lighting because you can see it shining on the front. I can't figure out where it's been captured but it looks like it's placed on this wooden texture. The poster is pretty simple and yet it's quite a good example because the image is eye-catching.

McDonalds 2

This is another McDonalds poster. It is pretty much similar to the other one so I won't go into too much details. The only difference is that there is more examples of food from their saver menu in this one. The design is exactly the same the elements like the logo and the typography are exactly in the same position. I like how that is done because there's a consistency with their establishment.

Subways

Here is a subway poster that is framed up in the store. The main element in this poster that is the most dominant is the price. They've used the technique of making the price the first noticeable thing to grab the viewers attention. The actual picture of the sub isn't quite big and in my opinion, it isn't a really good poster. The typography isn't really the wow factor either. I only would say the 'Bacon sub & a drink' is probably the only decent font that is used. I think the colours have been chosen well because it links with the Subway logo. I think there is more text in the poster than the actual image so it's not such an ideal poster for food.

Greggs

This is a Greggs advertisement for soup on a phone box. I really like the use of the typography just above the image that says 'We'll warm you up this autumn...'. I think this just addresses the poster directly to the viewer because it mentions the season. I really like the image that is used of the soup. It's been taken at a high angle so you can actually see the soup. They've also included the ingredients around the soup. I think it just works well along with the black background. The ingredients also bring out colour and makes it look appealing. The typography looks nice and matches with these autumn theme. They've used this red background and white text to inform us about the price and I think those two colours compliment each other too. Overall, I think it's a nice advertisement from Greggs and it seems well considered to what they've done and used.

Here are two stands that are advertising food for a pub. You can see how different their style and design looks for a mainstream establishment. I would say there are more better qualities and a lot more happening in these posters whereas the other posters are working around that simplistic look. There is a lot more text in these posters and I think that might make the poster look overcrowded with no empty space. The deli poster I think it quite pleasant. They've used 3 images of pub food and used an appropriate typography where the word deli is big and bold. They've also used bubbles that mentions that they've got a new meal out as you can see. The price seems like they've just added it on with a chalk. Either way, the design on the deli poster ain't bad at all. The chicken club uses this brown font and I think that isn't the best choice because it's quite similar with the background colour so it doesn't stand out much. They've used a fairly large image of a chicken meal and under that they've included some alcohol.

Starbucks

This pumpkin spice latte is a Starbucks advertising stand that sits outside their shop. I like the design on this little advertisement because it's very simplistic. They've originally went for the black background which works nicely for Halloween with the pumpkin theme. It even has a slogan which says Add spice to the season on the top which is very direct for October. I like how they've added their logo in the corner and it's not overly large yet it's quite noticeable enough because of the colour. The colour convention used is black and orange which is nice with the theme. They've used three different typography for each word for the name of their new edition. I think this just makes it stand out because it's not the same. The illustrations in the image is nice of the cup, the pumpkins and the spices. It's pretty straight forward and I really like this example.

Clover

This is a horizontal poster for Clover which is different to my other examples so far. The reason why I had to capture this advert was because of the way the text says nothing artificial gets in and then they've used The Queen's foot guards protecting the tub of butter. It's quite humorous and I thought it was quite cool how they're playing with words. The photograph used is taken perhaps in a kitchen because you can see how it's on a dinner table and the chair and the room layout in the back gives it away. I wouldn't say the typography used is so amazing but I like how they've chosen green which goes with the lid outline and their logo colour.

Flirt

This is one of my favourite posters. This is the poster that will inspire me to make my own like this. I just love the whole graphical element to the design. I'll start of with the logo. This is actually in the centre right on the top. It's got their logo colour box under the text and the text is in white which stands out. They've gone for this orange colour background which works nicely with brown. They used nice typography where they've introduced the product which in this case is the Cookie Crumble. The colour is also selected well with the brown and white. They've selected colours that are already in the poster for example the white is like the whipped cream and the brown is the flake. I like the image that is used along with the chocolate and the oreo behind it. They've edited it where there's a nice use of light flares. I like how they've used this circle with the price inside that sits on the milkshake. Lastly, they've included two social networking logo which means that they're reachable on it. I just love the simplicity and how there's no writing on it apart from the product name. I think in a poster like this, the picture just speaks for itself. All that blank space just draws your attention on to the milkshake.

This is a KFC poster for this caramel latte deluxe on a phone box. I think this is the same technique as the previous poster where there is no details except the establishment and the product. I love the minimalistic details on this poster. They've used a nice image of this latte on a wood table with a black background. Then captured caramel swirling over it. The typography is well suited with the actual look and colour of the latte and I really like the uses of the font. They've used this curly font for the caramel latte and used a different font for the words 'new and deluxe'. I think using different font just draws some attention because we automatically notice they look different. Overall, I must say I really like this and I think this is quite inspirational considering this is a poster that is for KFC - which is mainstream.

KFC vs McDonalds

This is a McDonalds version of a latte poster. It's not a caramel latte like the KFC one therefore I knew they will differ a little. In terms of the design, they both are pretty similar with the minimalistic features. They both include the name of the latte and they both mention that it's new. However in terms of the image, McDonalds went for an actual image in location rather than a blank background. This image uses depth of field where the background is completely out of focus and the latte is very sharp. I really like the typography that is used in this poster because it stands out with that blurred background and the golden yellow colour links with vanilla. In this example, they also added this 'introducing' text which KFC did not do. I think this was a nice touch to have because it emphasises on the latte being new. This poster ain't so bad. Also I've noticed that it's a lot different to their saver menu range. This is more natural and looks like there's a little more work to it in terms of photographing with location.

Pizza Hut

This is actually an advert from Pizza Hut that was on a phone box. I've just zoomed in and cut out the logo which was on the bottom bit. The reason why I was focusing on this closely was because of the use of typography. I love how they've used various fonts and colours for each word/phase. I really liked the font they've used for the word new because it reminds me of lights bulbs and theatres and it's almost broadcasting that it's new. The word menu is also one of my favourite font because it reminds me of them night lights that some shops use to show that they're open. I think it's quite groovy and funky even with the use of the arrow. Moving on to the imagery side of it, I think the shots they've used are great. Instead of going for the ordinary, they've got milkshake that is about to splat and food that looks appetising. The background is black so everything stands out nicely and I really love how it looks overall.

Subways 2

This is a whole complete story compared to my first subway poster. I would say this is a much better example where the actual food is the main subject. The photograph has been used nicely of the sub on a wooden table and a black backdrop. The typography has been used effectively in this design because it stands out. The word pastrami is red with a white inner shadow and it correlates and works with the meat in the sub. I like the nice graphical touches they've used with the lines and the dots because it just makes you read the text. I like how they've used this mustard bottle and this seasoning jar as additional props to compliment the sandwich. In this example, they've put a Halal sign near the bottom to inform us that the meat they use is halal. So far this is the first poster that has used a Halal sign for the Muslims.

Tesco

This isn't really a poster but I thought I would include it for the design and the typography of it.  I really like how the M&M's design is in the shape of a cut out Halloween pumpkin and inside the shapes is the m&m sweets. Looking at the typography in the Halloween Spookfest, I really love the font they've used because it's very suited to the occasion. The colour is also chosen well with orange and white which represents pumpkins and ghosts for example. I love how they've used eye balls as the two OO because it links well with the Halloween theme. The use of purple background is also very traditional for Halloween to represent the night. I think this is a great example of representing the codes and conventions of Halloween.

These are some Subway poster hand outs that I've psychically collected. I won't go over them too much because it's pretty similar to the other Subway posters I've touched on. However I will talk about this coffee and cookie hand out. I think this is actually a decent poster that uses nice imagery. It looks like they've taken this image on the floor because you can see this wood floor texture. Nevertheless, I like how they've broken up the cookie, placed some chocolate chips in front of the coffee and decided to shoot with this dark background. The typography is quite nice because of the ribbon banner style which is quite contemporary. The colour of the typography also matches the coffee cup which works well together. Also the price tag is the same colour so you know there's this consistency. I think it's quite a pleasant advertisement.

Task 4 - Additional Images

In this post, I will be doing an additional photoshoot for my 'Food For Thought' task on sweets, and keep it based upon my additional research technique on Flat Lays and still life. To conduct this photoshoot, I will be using a copy stand to set my camera facing directly down at my subject and using these lights to give it some life. Now I shall set up my work space.

Set up

This is a snapshot of the working space I am working at. As you can see, I've attached the camera on to the stand right above my subject. I've chosen to photograph skittles because they are colourful and I wanted some nice vibrant images of sweets. Here are my contact prints:

I believe the shoot went really well. I used the copy stand lights which is equivalent to room lights just to light up my subject nicely. I've also tested with the lights in some images, like keeping one side on and vice versa. Quite obviously, I like the images with both lights on because it gives me that studio effect. I've also arranged the skittles in multiple ways, changing up the colours and the shape. Also capturing from various angles to give it different looks. Here are some of my images:

These sets of images all use the same lighting on both sides. Each image is just taken from a different angle and I think background tone is exactly equal. I like No 1 the best because the skittles are the sharpest in focus and the position is quite nice in that empty space. No 2 is a nice graphical type of image because it's taken quite far back so the skittles are just sitting nicely in line. I think the camera holding technique is strong here because the skittles are so straight. No 3 is just a rotated and a closer version of No 2. I like this rotation technique because it gives this image a different perspective. It looks like the skittles are leaning on a wall or something crazy like that. Lastly, No 4 is the flat lay technique using the copy stand.

This image is different in the sense of the shape and the lighting. I tried to arrange each little skittle in this rainbow and only used the light on the right hand side. This actually gives a lighter expose on the right side and forms a shadow on the left. I like how each skittle is also reflecting the light on the right side and you can see where the light source is coming from just by looking at the skittles. This image was also taken with the flat lay technique.

Task 4 - Food For Thought

Plan I

My first idea is to photograph Profiteroles. I've chosen these images because they inspire me with the way they look. All of these images have depth of field in common where the background is blurred. I think this is one of the reasons why I've been drawn to the profiteroles. They look extremely appetising and there's a couple of different ways that i could potentially photograph them with the arrangements.

Some planning if I were to photo-shoot:
I would photograph my images in a still life way at home in the kitchen. I would intend to use natural lighting because I feel like you get the best results with it when it comes to food. I'd make sure I do them during daytime so my images are nice and bright. If things doesn't go to plan, then when I shoot on manual, I'd ensure that the exposure needle is set on 1 so it's bright. I won't need to make any arrangements because it's mainly still life. I will need my camera, SD card, battery and most importantly - I will need to buy some profiteroles. I can use some cutlery and plates that I have at home. The costs towards this shoot will go towards my profiteroles which will cost around £2-3 and my bus pass to travel to a supermarket.
