Evaluation

In this unit, we was focusing on expanding our skills in location photography under the theme of 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. We had to produce artwork LP record covers from these decades using location as key within our photography, linking it to the song or the lyrics itself. Our final photographs is presented as 12" x 12" prints and that of course is the outcome after several tasks.

Task 1 - Research
This task was the introduction for me. We was researching on each decade and looking at some location photography from the time. Then we looked at famous music photographers which I done some extras on. Finally, we created moodboards for each decade to help us understand each of the decade. I think this helped summarise some of the things so I had this to look back on anytime I was stuck. I also included library research so I have a variety of research sources.

Task 2 - Picking Record Covers
This task was when I got to pick 3 albums from different decades. I think this was a fun task because we got to look at different music albums and different genres. It also gave me the idea to pick 3 different genres which I thought was a good opporunity for me to explore different styles and fashion that I could make my own interpretations for each album. I also wanted to go for artists/musicians that not everyone would go for. I managed to find my albums but I think it took me a while because I wanted to make sure I had an idea of what subject I wanted to photograph or note down what first interpretations I had so I don't struggle when I go shooting. I also managed to do some research on them and evaluate the covers individually.

Task 3 - The Faces/Landscape Photoshoots
This task was when we went shooting and got some practical photographs. I managed to get quite a lot of images throughout both tasks. Along with getting the main images like 2 rural/country, 2 urban/city and 1 night scene - I managed to get lots more than minimal and some extra additional shoots. The faces were also quite a good task where I produced some silhouette images following up from the landscape images. I also demonstrated myself using the reflector and seeing the changes it makes. In that task, I was thinking of more of the techniques I could use that would suit my album covers so I didn't get a chance to try every technique but next time that would be something worth doing.

Task 4 - Planning/Shooting for Finals
This task was when I planned my images that I wanted to shoot. This was really good because I had ideas running through my head whilst I was researching my album covers. I managed to plan each shoot effectively with a risk assessment. After planning each shoot, I organised my time to go shooting and I was really happy with my shoots. I got images that linked to the genre of music and the songs itself and all I needed to do was edit them and make it fit more to the decade. Now it was all done to creating our final images.

Task 5 - Typography/Final Images/Prints
This task was following up from the planned images. I went and designed 3 12x12" album covers and printed them professionally. I won't go over this much because I feel like I thoroughly evaluated it throughout. Overall to summarise, I am extremely happy with my album covers. I have examples on gloss and matte finish so I can see the different effects it adds to my image. I also added typography on some and some purely on the location photography. I'm extremely chuffed that I made an extra 3 album covers that has also been printed in matte because I preferred that finish as it looks more slicker and suits the decades more. I think I used my own creativity during the process where I've considered the imagery to the decade to the music genre and to the typography.

Additional
Throughout the project, I've done additional work that comes under some of the task blog posts and some that are separate.  I've done some star trails that I've evaluated which didn't go to plan but it was still an experience that I enjoyed. It's certainly something I would try again sometime now that I know how to create it. I've included some concert images that ties in with the project and thought was a great bonus.

Overall it's been a challenging unit as we was strolling through it with the whole time strain and the adrenaline kicking in whether we're on track or we're going off board. But like usually, it always comes together in the end.
