Task 2 - Record Covers Picking

In this task, I will be choosing an album for each of the three decades (1960's, 1970's and 1980's). My ideas are to go for different genre of music for each decade so that gives me the option to photograph different images and allows me to inspect each style for the genre.

1960

'Jimmy Reed - Bright Light, Big City'
I've chosen this blues song from 1961 because of multiple reasons, but firstly is the song title. I liked the song title and I felt like it would be great to interpret this in my own way. I also liked that it was a song from the blues genre so I would be exploring a specific style. This album was released in August, 1961 and released under the record label 'Vee-Jay'. I think the single album is slightly effective to an extent considering it's in the 60's and these album artwork are usually just a portrait anyway. I think the lighting is used accordingly with the title because there is light being bounced on his face. I think it was created in a studio just because of this reason with the lighting and the black background. You could say this album does represent the fashion and style of this particular decade to a certain extent because it's a black and white styled image and you can see a little bit of his outfit but it doesn't exactly give away too much that it's representing the 60's. The image itself is just an portrait of the artist so it's not really related to the song title but more towards the artist.

The original album that the song is from is a little more effective with the fashion and style of this decade because of the instrument and the face outline. Even the blue cooler tones of the image just read out blues to me. This could either be a painting/artwork or a photograph. I tried to do some more research but I couldn't find anything about the design side of it. If it's an image, I think this was taken in a studio set up once again because it's a plain canvas with the centrepiece and some lighting directly on it. Otherwise this could be a painting and I would say this does link to the art movement of blues in the 60's becoming quite popular.

'Eagles - One of These Nights'
I've chosen this rock/soft rock genre song and album that was released in June, 1975. I've chosen this song because I get to make an album cover for a different genre from before and I quite liked the artwork for this album because it's quite distinctive. It was designed by Gary Burden and the photography was by Norman Seeff (which I've researched before) and Tom Kelly for the cover. I liked how it's overall a night time feel to the artwork and there's clouds behind this 'eagle' design. I think it's quite effective because it links to the band name and the night element links to the title of the song. I want to make my own interpretation and shoot at night so it links with the title and perhaps the lyrics. I think the sky was photographed in location and then the illustrations were put together to create this. The artwork is very contemporary in the art movement back in the 1970's. There isn't much fashion representations in the album cover but there's a distinctive style of rock in this decade with the typography, the colours and the design overall.

1980

Three Times Dope - Original Stylin'
I've chosen this hip hop song that was released in 1988 as my final album for the final decade. So far I've considered different genres such as blues, rock and now with hip hop. In that case, I get to explore how each genre has different styles especially within these 3 decades. For this album, I couldn't find the track lists however there are 12 songs and the album is named after the particular song that I've chosen. I think the album cover is quite effective because you can see a glimpse of the 80's fashion and I think the title of the song could link with fashion too. Although it's an portrait of their band, it's quite creative having the group name in the back which is overlayed over the white background because this album cover is for all the songs in it. I'm certain it's been shot in a studio rather than location and it fits well with hip hop because of the way they're posing and the simplicity of it.
