Further Research

After getting positive feedback from my review, it was time to do some further research about the genre I want to work with in more depth so I get a better understanding of what I will do for my final major project.

Street Photography #4_

I've used this link above to help me understand a bit more about street photography and thought this was a great website that has images to also display what it's all about. To summarise what street photography is - it's a type of candid photography in a public place. It's similar to photojournalism and it usually includes people or animals. It's all fast paced when you try achieve to shooting without being noticed so it's something I've not done before. I liked reading these tips on this website because it's very clear to understand what it's all about, and sometimes some techniques are not important like setups because it's photography on the go. The final outcome of street photography is interesting because it's all up to individuals interpretations and the image will be strong enough to tell it's own story without having to say too much about it. I also got to understand how it will take courage to shoot without asking for consent and I understood the law and how some places are public and are permitted.

Whilst researching about street photography, I came across what is called Urban Geometry and it's usually a genre that is similar and usually photographers can't answer how they differ. So I came across this website above and thought it was interesting because to me, it all comes under street photography but this genre is just specific towards the architecture a little more - yet so quite far off. It's more based around the art than the human conditions so looking at minimal colours or design. This website also goes into a comparison with street photography and looks at the difference which I thought was very useful. In their summary, it says the focus of street photography is the people and it's about capturing candid moments that aren't staged which I've touched on so this just clarified my understanding more and this will help me with my images.

Jeremy Perez-Cruz

Jeremy Perez-Cruz is an American photographer that does urban geometry photography, who is indeed a big influential artist for me. He got into it from his dad and when he moved to NYC, he fell in love with the geometry that plays a part in the city. I've selected this image here because it instantly stood out to me and I love the composition. He composed this image very well with the sky scrapers in the back. I love how he's thought of line and also captured the yellow taxis in a line, which actually represents the streets of NYC. The same way, I want to capture what represents my town through my images. This image has been edited nicely because the colours are very bold and it looks like it's been filtered well to suit the photography so it's deeper in contrast. The smoke is also a nice touch and makes the people in the back all mysterious in this busy city life.

Processed with VSCOcam with f3 preset

Simeon Rusnak is also an influential artist that does urban geometry photography. On the link, I found it very interesting how Simeon uses an iPhone to do his photography as it's convenience and compatible. Another key factor with this photographer is that he uses an editing application called VSCOcam to edit and filter his images to give it more of an effect. This app works perfectly for urban and street photography and I will definitely use it for my project. However, I do plan to shoot using my DSLR because it's a lot more challenging whilst shooting candid in public. In this image, he's used the f3 preset which gives this image a faded look and I like how the geometry of the building is closing in parallel, and the road lines is like leading lines that draws you in. The faded look works really well in this image because it gives it more effect being an empty looking town.

Nuno Andrade

I have put together a collage of Nuno's individual work pieces to portray the theme that occurs with his photography. I just love the brightness in his work with the sky and the subtle colours from the architecture. I find this very inspirational and would also want my images to have a common theme within them, and although this isn't fully street photography, this inspires me to have a same style in my images. I think I will achieve this by filtering my images the same so it's all similar.

Chaiwalla

Looking more on social media, I came across this account on instagram that has an amazing feed with his photography. Allan Edward Hinton is the man behind this account and he's feed is all about travelling and doing photography. There's examples of street, urban geometry, portraits and architecture photography that can be found on his instagram. The key feature I've chosen this photographer is because he travels to different countries and some of his street photography is very interesting with different locations. A lot of culture and traditions are portrayed in his images and I find it amusing to look at when it's all put together. This image here is an example of candid photography in a middle eastern country and you can see how the scenery is a lot different and you get different interpretations of the picture. The location being different from the ordinary is very appealing to me, so I do find it very inspirational.

MissUnderground

On this account, this unknown female photographer captures images at the london underground using her iPhone. These images are well composed and makes her feed look fascinating. She has a lot of followers and manages to capture stunning shots when the station is usually empty. I like this account because there's a common theme with the images and the images speaks for itself, it's very unusual but the images are really well shot and well considered. This image stood out because of the white colours and the lights making the image glow. I like how simplistic the image is but it's also composed well to draw you in.

Adam Sheath

Adam Sheath is a freelancer graphic designer who also has great photography. On his instagram account, he has tons of images whilst he's out and about and some are awesome for street photography. As he travels to different cities, he has captured images that represent each city through the architecture or the people. I like how his images are well composed and this image here is a prime example. The lighting in this image is good and it gives the glass a nice reflection. The timing of the shot is also good because he captured it just as this woman was about to take a step.

Here is a list of photographers that I've also had a look at and got inspired by, there was far too many to write about so I've attatched the link which also includes some of their work with a short description of each photographer:

To sum up the research, It was really interesting and fun to look at various photographers who does street photography and urban geometry. I feel like looking at their images just made feel inspired and makes me wish it was easy to travel and shoot different scenery, culture and history of those places. This bit of research has helped me look more in depth of the genre and understand what street photography is. There is no right and wrong but it's set me in the pathway of doing something new and that's what I'll be looking forward to in this project.
