Fashion Magazine Research

In this task, I will be researching on multiple fashion magazines and double spread pages. I want to ensure that I'm looking at a variety of different magazines for different fashion styles. I'll be looking at the design layouts and this research will help me when I produce my own magazine cover and double page spread. I will be doing this research primarily and secondarily using scanned magazines and the internet.

Magazine Covers

'VOGUE'

My first chosen magazine is Vogue. I've selected these two magazine covers because I quite like the look of Black and White that's used here. I think I will use the fashion style as inspiration because I think they both look very stylish and I think the dress/outfit will make it look very glamorous.

The first magazine on the left has a very modern look on the design because the way they've used the title and headlines. Especially with the pink box behind the text, it's very contemporary and current. I think the target audience is aimed at females from teenagers and beyond, and someone with a high income because Vogue is known for high fashion and a lot of the fashion content is all designer and expensive. The title and headline is used well here because it's easy to read, and it contrasts well with the grey/darkish background. The title sits behind the model which I find quite appealing, and the technique works well because it's eye-catching. The photograph looks like it's been taken on location and it's a 3/4 length shot. The lighting looks nice here because it's not too overly exposed and it looks slightly hard because there's a few shadows near her face and shoulders, it also seems high key to me. I like how the design looks modern so it may be similar to what I might produce.

The second magazine is much more minimalistic. I like how the style of the title is frequent and it's sitting behind the model. I love the contrast levels on this image because it makes the design look very retro in my opinion. It almost reminds me of the 30's fashion with the way the black tones contrasts with the white tones. I love how they've used this italic font for the word glamour and how the photograph doesn't really reveal much about the glamour. I think it's more focused on the pose and it creates this lifestyle of glamour. I would say it's taken in the studio and they've used high key and soft light because the exposure looks balanced around her face and arms and looks like the light source was quite far from her to spread evenly in my opinion. I love the simplicity of the cover but I don't think that the image is something similar to what I would like to produce because I want to produce something more current and this looks retro to me like the 30's glamour fashion.

'Teen VOGUE'

My second chosen magazine is Teen Vogue. I've selected these two magazine covers because I really love the simplicity within these covers and how nicely the colours work. I think I will use the fashion style as inspiration because I think they both look very casual and my aim for this magazine is to create a casual look - but not crossing the line with urban/grunge fashion.

Both of these magazines are the same when it comes to the design. The only difference is of course the image and some minor colour changes on the typography. I really love the designs of these two magazines because they are very eye-catching with the use of colours. It looks very current and modern and fits the youth target audience with a breeze. The title and headline is used perfectly here because it's sitting over the model and the colour been adjusted between the two so you can read it easily. The headline is also the same along with the subheadings on both covers and I think the positioning and the font worked really well because it's appealing and it's very modern which will really appeal to the appropriate target audience. I love the photography for these covers because the lighting is really good and the background colour is really balanced which I think is key to a good cover when it comes to studio images. They are pretty close up and composed nicely. I think they've used soft lights and high key because it's a bright cover and there's no harsh shadows. I am actually going to design my front cover similar and produce my teen vogue magazine cover using this as my inspiration.

'INDIE'

*Disclaimer* This magazine cover research was done after my studio shoot. So with my third and final dark/urban fashion shoot, I decided that this magazine would be perfect for my grunge styled images. I thought about my target audiences and the style, and it wasn't the type of image that would suit Teen Vogue as an example, because that was too feminine and very lively. So I came across this unique independent style magazine which actually has a nice logo with a scribbly line across and thought it would work really well with my last fashion look. I love the simplicity of these covers and how they use a portrait or a close up shot of the model and the way they position their title so it's nice and clear. The left image was taken on location and I love the colours in the image with the hair and sunglasses, I think it really contrasts nicely with the dark/urban background. The right image was perhaps taken in a studio and you can see they've used high key lighting and soft light coming from the right, which means there's not many harsh shadows as the light source is distanced. They've used this red circle which works nicely with his clothes, and I just think this is a clean cover because the skin tones really compliment the background tones. It reminds me of a natural 'tumblr styled' cover representing the urban/street fashion in the current youth.

Double Page Spreads

By far, this has to be my favourite double page spread that I've found online. I think it looks stunning because the images are so colourful and visually it stands out. It is a very minimalistic double page spread but I think it's more effective than having lots of text especially when the purpose of the magazine is to promote and advertise the fashion. I love how the details of their outfits is in the corner so it's not cluttered around. This design is very modern and it would be targeted at teenagers and beyond. I love how one page with the image has a white border around and the next page is filled with the image. This style just visually makes it look appealing and eye-catching. The design is definitely similar to what I want to produce for my spread because I think minimalistic is the new style so this will be my main inspiration.

Here is a double spread that I found quite interesting. I like how they've manipulated the photograph and how it's broken up in pieces to make up the image. I thought it's a creative idea and it's a very modern design. I think this magazine spread is aimed for men and the target audience is maybe late 20's who is in smartwear. I think the design is quite minimal too, they've used the space around which I think is a good technique because it draws your eyes in. The title of the article looks nice and simple. The paragraph also seems great because it's not too overwhelming with text. I think the image design is an idea that will inspire me within my design because I feel like it's a very modern style and it's just about putting some creativity into our image.

Again, this spread is similar to an extent with how they've used photography. They've created a collage/montage of images together to create the look. I think it's a good idea but personally, I prefer the previous design because it's more professional. This is creative but it's not the best looking spread. Another point to consider is how overwhelming this spread is because there's an overload of text everywhere. I don't think it's really suited to fashion to have that much text and I definitely think the minimalistic theme is best suited because it just allows the picture or fashion to speak for itself. So this spread won't be similar to what I will produce, but it sure helped me to compare to what I'd like my spread to look like.

I quite like this spread mainly because of the photography. With the design element, they've used two images and filled the page up with the image. I think the simplicity of the design is nice but with the title and the yellow text, it could have looked a lot better in my opinion. I think the photography is great because we have a long length shot and a closer shot to show the two perspectives and because the images are similar, I think it worked well with the black and white. I might use the design to some extent as a reference but I'm more keen with just the positioning of the images and the corner small text.

This is a compilation of some well designed examples. I really love the positioning and the style within these designs. The layout of the typography and the images are really eye-catching. The main feature that stands out in these designs in the square outlines and the lines under the title. I noticed that with these designs, they look eye-appealing because they have this faded look. There is no strong contrasts in here and because of that, it stands out how everything is just faded and minimal. I think it's such a modern design and it would suit fashion so well. A design like this would suit teenagers as the target audience and it would be versatile for different fashion styles. I think the design is similar to what I would like to produce depending on my images.

Double Page Spreads

This is a double page spread for DKNY. I think this is really my type of spread, as you may have discovered so far. I love the minimalistic look and in this case, I just love how the whole page is literally just the designer brand in the centre. I also love how the image isn't filling up the page and that there is a white border around it. I think it's super appealing and it gives a great effect on the brand, making it look elegant and classy.

I like this spread because of the images. The advertisement is for Goldsmiths and they're promoting this watch. I think it's great that there's a picture on the left which doesn't instantly shout out the obvious which is that the picture is for a watch, but the right image tells you. I like how they've captured someone holding a sparkler instead of them just modelling their wrists, it's much creative than that. These images are positioned in the centre with a border and like I've previously said, I think it works well for a high fashion shop.

Here's an interesting spread that is designed to look retro. They are promoting vintage fashion and I love how they've used the title and the little image on the left side of the page and then filled the right side with a image. The backdrop of the image is brown and very neutral, this really does have a vintage feel to it. I think the besides the colours, the fashion is very unique. I think it's a great design for vintage but I don't think I'll be doing a vintage look but it was really eye-catching and different to see.

Unlike the others, here's a Louis Vuitton double page that used one horizontal image to fill up both pages. I think it's worked nicely because of the location and it has a retro feel to it because the colours are washed away and she's stood in some form of a desert. I think seeing this on here doesn't do it enough justice compared to holding the real magazine. The logo is on the bottom right which is eye-catching and there's literally no text apart from a small catchphrase in the bottom left which is quite interesting. I probably won't be using this design for mine because my images would be taken in the studio so it won't have a fancy background which might not work as well as this does.

Here is some CHANEL double page spreads. You can see how they vary with the design but they all still look very high fashion. The top two images uses black and white photography and there's a comparison there of high and low key lighting. The left image has no typography apart from the brand logo in grey on the bottom right. The right image is similar to what I've analysed before with a filled page and a smaller image with a border, which is quite nice and common. Lastly is one image and a page just dedicated to the brand. I think these are well classy and I will be using these are my influences and create similar designs.

Won't say much about this spread because it's similar to the previous spreads except that the image is bigger and almost fills the page. I love how the logo is displayed here and the minimalistic theme is actually real within the industry where there's no actual typography.

This is a Michael Kors spread which I quite like. It has a very retro look to it and it's targeted at females probably in their 20's. The design in this is different so far where they've used the same image twice in two different perspective. One is a wider view showing the model sitting with her MK handbag, then you have a closer view of her face where she's wearing her MK sunglasses. The colours in these photography and her outfit looks very vintage and I think it's designed nicely as the right image isn't in the centre like previous examples, it's actually slightly lower. Depending on my images, I might consider using the same image twice but it probably won't be as good as this.

Finally, I have my last spread to talk about. I like this spread because it's very casual on the fashion perspective. It's very street and urban and I like the layout with the full and smaller images. It's interesting how there's not a title in this spread which usually appeals people in. With the photography, I like how casual the images look and there's not much contrast so it's very faded/muted. The writing isn't too bad or overwhelming so I think it's not a bad spread. I will probably create a similar design but I think that it won't look as interesting because they've done fashion photography on location so it just gives it a better atmosphere.
