After planning my shoot, I went ahead and got it done. It was a tough session and I tried my best to get the lighting I want but it just wasn't happening how I imagined it. I wanted to use high key lighting with soft lights so it's a balanced background and have no harsh or any shadows apart from the facial features (Like the TeenVogue magazine in the research). What I was getting instead was all the marks around the studio and then this rainbow colour background which was quite difficult to deal with. Eventually, I got over it and decided that I had to work with what I got. If I had to self critique myself, I wouldn't have thought about doing 3 different looks where I wanted different lighting for each set up. Then that way, I'd have the time to spend just on one look. However, trying to keep the positivity going, I managed to continue and then did a re-shoot, where I got to change the studio attachment and use a snoot at the least for my dark, urban theme. Here are all my images:
These are a few selected images that went well. These images were for my first plan where I wanted to do a glamour/high fashion shoot. This look is also going to be for my Vogue magazine designs because I think it's best suited through my research. I selected these images here because I think the lighting is fairly balanced and I've mainly used soft lights. I think the closer I was shooting, the better control I had over the background being all equal because I was avoiding the floor. With these four images, I've had my model pose in different ways and that was where I've used my research into practice and thought about the poses. I like how these images are composed and I included enough background space because it would help me when I design my covers. My favourite image here is the bottom left because I love the lighting on her face. There is good contrast bearing in mind that the image isn't really edited. The pose is very natural and it that's why I think it would fit the modern glamorous look because it's just effortless. I like the background because it's all natural toned and also the simplicity of my model, how she is just wearing the dress and a necklace.
This is the second casual look shoot that I did as part of my plans. This look is going to be for my Teen Vogue magazine designs because the fashion is very casual and common within that target audience of teenagers. The lighting in this image wasn't intentional to be completely honest but I think it actually worked really well. It's not as nice as the grey background cover in my research but this brings a warmth mood to it. I think this would work well with the Spring edition of the magazine because it's leading up to summer so it came together. I've selected these images here because I was exploring different techniques and poses and I thought that the creative side went well. I wanted to go casual with the shoot because it's casual fashion so I thought I could have my model on the floor too because I didn't want it too formal. I've composed these shots with enough background space so I can add text with ease for my covers. I like how I used a fan and it's worked effectively in the bottom left image on her hair, I think that image would work really well if it was a closer shot of her face, so more of a portrait.
Last but not least is my final look. I wanted to go beyond that Teen Vogue look and create a dark, urban look. Initially, I thought I'll use a look like this for Teen Vogue but after a lot of research, I just felt like it wouldn't fit because that magazine was all about the girly look and it was a lively, bright magazine. I couldn't find one article or page that was based on this type of fashion so I re-considered my magazine and did some additional research. That was when I came across INDIE and thought that it would work perfectly for that with that niche target audience. Nevertheless, I selected these images because it displays a variety of different poses and I liked the lighting and the range of different shots. My favourite image has to be the top right because it's a portrait shot of my model and I just love how casual and effortless it looks. The styling looks really good here especially because of her hair. It reminds me of that Indie magazine I used in my research task of the Chinese man. I think the lighting and contrast is effective and considered well because the dark, bold look really suits this style of fashion.
So there I have my 3 different looks for my 3 different styled magazines. I think I was glad that I pushed my boat and tried to make effort with organising my studio sessions besides the disasters at the time. It came to realisation that my magazine was going to be targeted at females and this was really out of my comfort zone but I stuck to doing them instead of changing it up. I think the research has also helped me just to get on with it. Initially, I think I did a good job in using that research as influence and producing my own well-considered fashion photography in the end.
