Street Fashion

In this task, I will be capturing images of street fashion on location. The main focus is on the clothing and accessories that people wear out and about. This task is inspired by some newspapers and magazines that run this soft of topic, as a spread or on a regular basis. For my images, I will be considering the background where I will try not to make it too distracting. I will shoot with a combination of vertical and horizontal format images, including close-ups of specific items. Also will be looking at capturing ¾ length and full length images of my models to show a variation. It's also important to communicate with my model and consider the pose and expression they have whilst I shoot. Here is my images:

Mini-Evaluation
After attempting to shoot on location, I decided to travel to town and ask some of the public people around. I realised it was tough to get these shots. It was easy communicating and asking them but majority of the people said no because it was busy times in the shopping centre. I did have high expectations from this task but I found it tough to create similar images that fashion bloggers would post because they know great locations and they have amazing equipment and lens to create that bokeh background whereas we had the basic kit. However, I definitely feel the need to re-shoot again. Here is some of my images analysed:

This is my favourite image from the shoot. I like her fashion sense from her fur coat to her hat and hair. I think the lighting is nice and bright for the background and the model is exposed well. Considering this shot was taken quick as soon as we asked her, I think it's not a bad attempt. I remember thinking about my research at the time and thought of capturing this from a slight angle instead of direct ahead so I got my model to pose this way. I shot this as a half length because I wanted to fill the frame in this vertical format.

This is a close-up shot of some specific fashion items like the boots, the handbag, the trousers and coat. I decided to capture this on a horizontal format instead of vertical because I wanted to include the floor bricks because it represents the street. You can see this fashion style is very grunge and I think it works well with the background, plus it's not too distracting either. I could have edited it more to make it look more suited to the style but I wanted to keep it natural looking.

Here is my final example from this shoot. I've chosen this image because I liked the attire. I decided to get a headless shot so it's just focused on the fashion. I wanted my model to have his hands in his pockets and lift one feet up so you can see that bend in his knees. I do like how the black colour in the image is very punchy with contrast and it's quite distinctive. I had to cut bit of his arm off because there was lots of people behind so I didn't want the background to be distracting so took it how it is.

2nd Attempt:

Mini-Evaluation
This time I decided to stay local and give it a try, and I am much content with these images. I went by myself and asked a bunch of strangers to help me and be my model. Although I was local, I tried to use a variety of places to get different backgrounds. Here are some of my images:

This man here was on his way to the gym when I asked him if he was willing to let me take a picture of him. He was really tall and I thought I'd consider the way he was posing and holding his body gesture, so I told him to turn his head towards the camera while his body is facing the other way. This way, I managed to get a 3/4 shot. He had his gym bag and outfit which I thought is essentials and fit that lifestyle within street photography. I like how the model is pin sharp in focus and the background has been blurred. The lighting in this image is natural and I like how balanced it looks because the brightness on the top contrasts with my model so he stands out.

These two images are different shots of this new model. For the first image, I wanted to get a half shot on a vertical format, this allows me to capture his jacket and also capture his face. I blurred the background and focused the image on him. I thought about his body position and thought that just by putting his hands in his pocket, it makes it fit street fashion because it's quite informal and casual. I ensured that he had a serious face and looked directly through the camera because I was trying out different ways and I thought it looked the best. The second image is a close-up shot of his shoes and I like how this image was composed. I got him to model his shoes, also you can see the bottom of his jacket and there's this orange theme working in both images. I also got him to hold the cigarette in the shot because I think it gives it a gritty street effect and personally I like it, I also seen some images while doing historical research where photographers had their models smoking. Both of these images have a very warm tone to it and it gives it a vintage effect.

These series of images are my favourite from the shoot. I like how there's a theme of grass in the background in these images. For these three images, I was shooting different length shots to show a variety. I was also using shallow depth of field to make it look more eye-catching. My favourite would be the top half shot. I like the lighting and contrast in this image and I also love how it was composed. Using the rule of thirds (throwing it back to last year). I love the lighting in this image because the sun was directly hitting my models face in a balanced way where there's no harsh shadows. I love how pin sharp he looks and I was impressed with how he stands out from the grass in the background which could be a dominant green. The other two shots were me trying a long length and a 3/4 shot and they also look great. It was taken under shadow and you can see a sneak peak of the sun shining in the back. I also switched from horizontal to vertical so I can fill him in the frame. The outfit he was wearing was street to me because it was casual and that essential style is out again.
